Most users will be familiar with the Follow function for records in Dynamics 365. The function allows seeing all activities of the followed record in your personal Activity Feed. For example, it is possible to follow a customer and see which support tickets are still open, or have already been solved, without calling up the customer record. For most standard entities the follow function is activated from the start. But what about custom entities that you create yourself? Read our blog article to learn how to unlock the feature for custom entities.
Especially for this tutorial, we have created a small custom entity in our presentation system. If you look at the upper bar, you will notice that the Follow function is missing.
Here is a comparison of how it looks on the contact entity where the functionality is present from the beginning. To follow a record, you must first select a record in the view.
To activate the function for the new entity it is necessary to open the settings for the Activity Feed. These settings can only be accessed by a CRM administrator. Therefore, you must first make sure that you have the appropriate security role, or alternatively contact your CRM administrator.
Open the advanced settings and then the Activity Feed Configuration.
Make sure the Post Configurations view is selected and you have updated the entities (refresh). Otherwise, you may not be able to find the new entity on the list.
After the refresh, the entity should be visible on the view. Select the entity and click Activate.
A note on publishing the entity popups. Under Settings, go to Solutions and publish any customizations.
If you return to the custom entity after the steps, you can see the Follow function.
